Sailing with International Exchange Students

19 July, 2012 - Lake of the Ozarks (LOZ)
Miles sailed: 17

Over the years, Angie, our boys and I have hosted international exchange students for full school years, half  year and on short summer programs.   Anymore, we do the short program--even though Angie and I are not members of the Lions organization.  It's very expensive on us especially over the past several years but we try to give them a taste of Americana and put a good foot forward.   This year, we had young men from Germany, Austria and France!   Arne, Alex and Thomas.

The ramp we found at that end of the lake was extremely steep.   We launched, motored under the old Hurricane Deck bridge and found a small cove to anchor in and raise the mast and rig for Sailing.

Taking a load of passengers out for a sail...
One of the adult host families have a permanent home down on the Lake of the Ozarks (a lake nicknamed 'Magic Dragon' due to its shape.)   Most of the students and host families meet here for group BBQ with a day of swimming and exploring tourist attractions.   It gives the students, who had spent summer camp together, a chance to catch up with each other and hang out.

Heading out for a fun sail!
Galactica moored at neighbor's dock during lunch...
We decided to arrive via the lake on Galactica this year rather than driving there.  This was  a lot of fun.   Angie spent the day life guarding at the dock so that the students didn't have to wear life jackets.  Meanwhile, I spent the day taking groups of five students and host leaders for sails.   It was a lot of work on me but tremendously fun since nearly all of them had never been on a sailboat before--let alone sail on one.

Returning to dock...

Docking was interesting every single time I came in.   Winds were flukey in the cove and coming from different directions each time!

Preparing to shove off with another group of passengers...

Heading back out....
Angie took pictures from the dock; I was preoccupied and didn't take any photos while we were out.

Preparring to shove off for the end of the day....
We de-rigged Galactica at this dock to save time.   Actually, it made it very easy and fast!  We motored back to the ramp and loaded her onto her trailer.    Once we pulled up the steep hill to the highway, we stopped at Sonic by the lake in Hurricane Deck; ordering Fruit Slushes (it was hot) and burgers!
Waiting for slushes and burgers at Sonic!

It was definitely a fun trip out and a great way to spend a Thursday during the 2012 heat wave!
